Dialectic Journal Template (15 minutes)
The students can use the Dialectic Journal Template to organize their responses to HOMS discussion questions, while providing direct textual evidence in order to support their claims. The Dialectic Journal Template serves as a graphic organizer to help improve student comprehension.
DJT Questions:
1. In describing her house, or where she lives, what does Esperanza convey about her self-identity? How is the description of her house different from other information about her and her family’s identity, such as a name, an occupation, or a physical description?
2. What binds the family together in The House on Mango Street?
3. What does Esperanza find shameful or burdensome about her name? Why might Cisneros have chosen this name for her protagonist?

EXTENDED ACTIVITY (???): FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE BATTLE
Students will be divided into groups. They will brainstorm figurative language they could use to describe their house, name, neighbors, and especially the hairs of their family members. The goal is to make the figurative language examples as crazy or creative as possible. As students brainstorm, I will go around the room and help them think of similes/metaphors to describe the people they know. Students will write down as many examples of figurative language as possible, ranking them from best to worst. Students will send different representatives from their groups to the front of the room to read one of the examples. The class will vote on who had the better sentence by raising their hands.
